Essential Accessories For Overland Camping
Overlanding involves long-distance travel in a truck or SUV with camping as an essential part of the adventure. Several truck accessories are essential for overland camping, including roof tents and folding camp chairs.

What is real camping?

Ground tents are a good option for overlanders because they can be tailored to specific environments like jungles or Arctic regions. A good ground tent is also light and compact when closed.

Rooftop Tent
Whether you’re an experienced overlander or just getting started, there are many sleep systems to choose from. In this episode of Principles of Overlanding, Matt Swartz and Scott Brady explore the pros and cons of rooftop tents, cots, ground tents, and sleeping in your vehicle.

Rooftop tents offer a unique camping experience, offering a view that you can’t get from a trailer or camper van. They are also easier to set up than a traditional ground tent, and they can be stowed away when not in use.

They are often made from polyurethane-coated polyester and cotton blends, meaning they are insulated and have a high level of waterproofing. Some are even rustproof, making them ideal for off-road camping. They can also be mounted on a range of different vehicles, including 4x4s, SUVs, and trucks.

There are two main types of rooftop tents – hard shell and soft-shell. Hard-shell tents have a plastic or metal roof that opens vertically, while soft-shell tents have a canopy that folds like a book and is made from fabric. There are also hybrid options that incorporate both hard and soft elements.

A major drawback of rooftop tents is that they are not as sturdily built as other types of tents, so you have to be careful how and where you set them up. They also require regular maintenance to prevent damage bell tent glamping and keep them in good condition.

Another issue is that you can’t just pull your vehicle and tent away from the campsite to go on excursions, so they are not as versatile as other types of camping systems. Lastly, they can be quite expensive. However, if you’re committed to overlanding, it may be worth the investment for the unique vantage point and increased safety from wildlife that they provide. They can also make it much easier to find a spot to park in remote locations.

DMOS Delta Shovel
The DMOS Delta Shovel is a collapsible shovel that is billed as “the last shovel you’ll ever need.” It’s made for those who do and engineered to withstand a lifetime of abuse. The Delta shovel is a full-sized 51-inch shovel when extended, yet it packs down to 24 inches and fits in the back of your 4Runner or into a storage bin. It’s ludicrously overbuilt and feels like a tool that was designed to be used by professional soldiers or firefighters, but it’s built for those of us who spend our free time exploring the backcountry, digging a cat-hole or unsticking a stuck car.

The Delta shovel is available through a Kickstarter campaign that ends in less than a month. Early backers can get the shovel for $149, which is well below the retail price of $295. The Kickstarter includes a vehicle mount that fits on the back of a spare tire or roof rack, as well as a ballistic nylon carry bag with Molle straps.

DMOS’s vehicle mount is made from the same aluminum as the shovel blade and extends to a height of 51 inches when in use. It’s rattle-free, lockable and is designed for quick deployment. You can also bolt it to the side of your camper, truck or roof top tent to give you easy access to the Delta shovel whenever you need it.

I tested the Delta shovel in the desert, where it’s easy to imagine it being used for a multitude of tasks. From digging a cat-hole or moving gravel to unsticking the undercarriage of your car, the Delta is ready for anything. The shape-shifting shaft is a joy to operate, with very little play in the handle when extended and a nice feel in your hand. I’m looking forward to testing the Delta shovel in a few different scenarios when it’s fully launched this fall.
